Peter Tompkins
Family:
Peter
and his wife, Veronica, are new residents to Cobb County. They have two sons Alex (18)
and Brooks (12) and a daughter Caitlyn (7). Alex ran cross country and track at Dacula High School and
then at Mill Creek High School.
What
is your background in running?
Peter
began running when he was 12 years old. Since he was very short in the 7th grade, he thought it
would be cool to be on the junior high XC team. After running throughout high school, (and running a
4:28 mile), Peter took about 25 years off from running until starting up
again in 2000. Since then, he
has run about 6 marathons and a dozen half marathons. Peter continues to run for health
benefits, as well as stress relief and for the benefits that he sees in his
work performance.
What
is your favorite running trail?
Peter
is new to Cobb but recently ran the 5-mile loop off John Ward Road at
Kennesaw Mountain. He thought
it was great.
What
do you think is the most pertinent issue in running today?
Peter feels that getting kids involved
at a younger age by reaching out to elementary school kids and supporting
middle school programs is crucial to the future of running.
What do you hope RunCobb will accomplish?
I think through RunCobb we can raise the
awareness of the importance of developing a running community and erase the
common misconception that running = pain. I hope that we can promote
running as fun and help bring more and more people into the sport through
races and by trail and running club developments.
