Meredith Holmgren
Family:
Meredith is married to Alex
Holmgren. Their son Miller is
three years old. Meredith is a
high school math teacher and assistant cross country coach at Harrison.
What
is your background in running?
Meredith began running as a freshman in
high school in Mobile, AL. Her
mother insisted that she join the team at McGill-Toolen High School,
because they had a wonderful coach and all of the runners always had a
great time. Meredith soon
found that her mother was right and fell in love with the sport. In college, Meredith was an
athletic trainer for AuburnÕs cross country and track teams.
What
is your favorite running trail?
Meredith
enjoys running anywhere off the roads. One of the great things about running is escaping the
busy roads and city and being able to enjoy nature. When in shape, MeredithÕs favorite
trail is the 5-mile loop at Cheatham Hill (It is not fun if you are out of
shape).
What
do you think is the most pertinent issue in running today?
The most pressing issue in running today
is preserving natural areas for runners to use. Every time the parks department builds a new park, they
pave a running trail. If
runners wanted to run on pavement, then they would run in their
neighborhoods. Runners need
natural running trails in safe areas.
What other organizations, teams, or other
activities are you involved with?
Meredith is the assistant cross country coach at
Harrison High School. She also
was an assistant track coach from 2001-2003. Meredith is currently forming HarrisonÕs Junior Cross
Country team, which will begin this summer.
What do you hope RunCobb will accomplish?
Meredith hopes that RunCobb will be able
to make a difference in the future of running in Cobb County. She hopes to be able to preserve
greenspace for runners to use and to encourage the development of youth
running programs.
